"Eroticism is one of the basic means of self-knowledge, as indispensable as poetry." - Anaïs Nin
I am intrigued by the artfulness of yoga and the arousals that come with it.
When I say arousal, I mean everything that our movement practice awakens, stirs up, shifts, excites & stimulates.
I am constantly intrigued by the artistic expression of yoga. It is within those sensual, hard-to-articulate moments that I find magic. Like any art, it can be hard to describe where that quality of beauty or inspiration or grace comes from; from which depths do we dig to unearth such unpolished yet gleaming creations?
This is what keeps me coming back to my body each day - the knowledge that my body houses all of the art tools and evocative ingredients needed to create the most exquisite masterpiece. Each day it moves differently. Each day it feels differently. Each day it illuminates a different sensation or takes a similar emotion and decorates it with a different color so I can expand my perspective or see anew. Each day I am offered a new palette of colors to work with.
In nature, there are pieces that are brilliant and seemingly perfect. There are pieces that are ruffled and imperfect. There is messy. There is neat. Just like us. And it is no surprise, since we are each glimpses into nature. We mimic the same rhythms that nature plays day in and day out.
Whatever your rhythm may be today - messy or neat - let it play out. Listen intently like you are listening to a brilliant piece of music. Because you are. The more you listen, the more you'll notice how all of the separate pieces harmonize to produce a work of art.
In yoga, we experience this kind of harmony between the body, mind & breath. We begin the process of making music with these three components through mindfulness. Through patience. Through attention. Through consistent action.
Just as any musician practices a song over and over until the melody is practically infused into his bones, we practice being with the pose, with the breath, with the patterns of the mind until the shaky parts are played out and we move through a piece of art that is smooth. That is harmonious. That is an expression stemming from the deepest, unchartered places in us.
These are moments when we feel the hum of music beginning at our center & gradually emiting sound outward to our edges and beyond.
These are moments worth savoring. These are moments to remember you are an artist. It doesn't matter if you've never picked up a paintbrush or strummed a guitar. You, by the act of living, are creating art. Each moment can be a line of poetry. Each moment can be a brush stroke. Each moment can be a splatter of vibrant color that catches the eye.
If you choose to, you can see sweet beauty filling the air. You can showcase the art that lives in and around you.
